Gold Medallist Taught in West H. A. Sutherland, 68
Hugh Allison Sutherland, 68, died early Thursday morning, March 25th, 1965, in the Fullerton Nursing Home after a lenghty illness.
He was born in Heathbell, Pictou County, a son of Daniel and Margaret (MacKenzie) Sutherland.
A Pictou Academy gold medallist, he was a graduate of the University of Saskatchewan. He taught in Swift Current and at Scott Collegiate in Regina. He was a resident chemical analyst at the University of Saskatchewan.
He returned to Nova Scotia in 1932 and opened the Maritime Extension College in Pictou.
A member of Branch 16 (Pictou) Royal Canadian Legion, he served in the active army in the First World War and was a lieutenant in the reserve army in the Second World War.
Besides his wife, the former Marguerite MacKay of Pictou, he is survived by a brother Russell, Scotsburn; two sisters, Ann (Mrs. Ian MacKenzie), Toronto; Margaret (Mrs. Westland MacLennan), Tatamagouche.
The remains were resting at the MacLaren Funeral Home, Faulkland Street, Pictou. The funeral service was held Saturday at 2:30 p.m. in Bethel Presbyterian Church, Scotsburn. Rev. L. M. MacNaughton officiated.
Burial was in the Bethel cemetery.
